Thorn, Rose, Bud

Hey there! How was your week? We are just 2 days back to school and initial reactions are… mixed. It’s hard to be the new girls, you know? In some ways, it’s like they are saying goodbye to their old lives all over again…

Have you heard of the conversation starter Thorn, Rose, Bud? A friend told me about it last weekend and I thought it was a great way to close out the summer and look towards fall.

It works like this: each person at the dinner table describes their day (or week or summer) in terms of a thorn (the worst thing that happened), a rose (the very best thing) and a bud (something to look forward to). Isn’t that sweet? And a good way to get the kids talking…

Here’s my end-of-summer thorn, rose and bud…

Thorn - Easy to recall, hard to talk about. The most difficult day of the summer was the day we said goodbye to Kuba. I held the girls back, while the new owner drove away with our dog. Every fear and tear related to our move came out in that moment. Ugh.

Rose - Our first dinner together in our new flat in London. It was just pasta, but it was a home cooked meal and we were all together again.  :)

Bud -  I’m looking forward to a better balance. We’ve been running nonstop since we left Seattle 3 months ago. I’m looking forward to the hours between school drop off and pick up. A little more me time… to exercise, to blog, to furnish the house, to make more home cooked meals, to plan more travel…
