I finally have the built-in bookcases that I’ve always wanted!
Now Jenna’s going to help me “style” them… you didn’t think we would just stick books in them, did you? ;) Here are my guidelines…
1. Paint the inside just a smidgen darker than the rest of the room, if you can. It just adds an element of depth and cohesiveness to the wall. And while you’re at it, add some lighting too, if you can.
2. Bookcases are for books. Keep every book that makes you happy - coffee table books, literary fiction and trashy romance novels. There are no books not worthy of a shelf.
Some people like to arrange books by color, but I think that’s weird and unnatural. When I see books organised by color, I think, has anyone ever read these books? Who says to themselves "Where’s that blue book I read a few years ago?” When someone asks you, "Have you read The Unbearable Lightness of Being," do you say, "I don’t know, what color is it?"
Arrange by size and shape if you must. But not by color. Please.
3. Add art and objects… to make the books more beautiful add visual interest to the room.
