Fall is a hard time for us to get away. Between soccer season and Nutcracker rehearsals, our schedule is just bananas. Getting on an airplane is out of the question.
But surely I could find a long weekend to drive to one of these places... right? We've been to the San Juan Islands several times, but I need to visit the rest of these places before we move...
2. Olympic National Park, WA - Glacier mountains and temperate rain forests. There is so much to see here, we would probably need 3 days: Crescent Lake Lodge, Hurricane Ridge (so named for the gusty winds), Forks (the town that inspired Twilight) and Shi Shi Beach (named "most dramatic beach in Washington State").
3. Crater Lake - Like the moon fell to earth and filled up with water. Crater Lake is all the way down in southern Oregon, so it's probably too far away for a quick weekend getaway. Better to wait until March and tack on a trip to The Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, OR.
4. Lake Chelan - Where Seattleites summer. I don't think it would be as idyllic in October. It makes the list only because the wine Crush Festival is scheduled for the first two weekends of October. I've always wanted to stomp grapes Lucy-style.
If you had one weekend to be a tourist in your home region - where would you go?
